A drum clinic with Barry van Zyl
Barry van Zyl has played with the Clegg Band for the past 11 years. He also maintains a busy session schedule and has recently worked with artists such as Annie Lennox , Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Peter Gabriel , as well as projects such as the percussion soundtrack for the Oscar winning feature film 'Tsotsi' and the upcoming German produced feature film 'Themba' .
The event will be a worldmusic clinic , focusing on drumming in the worldbeat 'commercial' genre. Barry uses Johnny Clegg hit tracks to demonstrate and deconstruct the grooves he uses and invented.
The discussion includes topics such as staying within tradition while remaining 'radio friendly'. The core of all this is based in polyrhythms. Barry will also include one of his own tracks Hadeda, which explores different pulses happening at the same time. The clinic closes with a Q&A session.
